PlastiChain Lite: Blockchain-Enabled Plastic Waste Monetization for Circular Prosperity
Kenya generates over 2,400 tons of plastic waste daily, yet less than 10% is recycled. Informal waste collectors, who do the bulk of the work, remain underpaid, invisible, and disconnected from formal markets. Without transparency, plastic credits and EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) systems fail to scale equitably or credibly.
PlastiChain Lite is a digital traceability platform designed to tokenize recovered plastic waste, giving value and visibility to what’s usually discarded. By combining AI-based material classification and blockchain-backed proof-of-recovery, the system allows informal recyclers and cooperatives to log plastic types, verify them with a smartphone camera, and receive real-time digital tokens. These tokens can be used to claim payments, carbon credits, or be sold to verified buyers such as ESG-focused manufacturers.
The goal: Make every kilogram of plastic count, economically, environmentally, and socially.
Developed with and for community recyclers, PlastiChain Lite is designed to democratize access to the circular economy, lower barriers for carbon and plastic credit issuance, and enhance global transparency for brands meeting their sustainability targets.
